The Applications Research and Technical Service (ARTS) Group at Corn Products Specialty Ingredients has the experience and laboratory capabilities to custom formulate hard candy, chewing gums, panned confections, caramels, chews, marshmallow, chocolate and chocolate-coated confections, nutritional bars, and pressed mints. We can help you brainstorm new products or trouble-shoot technical formulation challenges. We can also help you analyze water activity, carbohydrate distribution, glass transition or melting characteristics, crystallization characteristics, and textural differences. ARTS can provide detailed characterization of shelf life changes related to moisture pickup in response to differences in relative humidity and/or temperature.

Our strength lies in our ability to deliver great-tasting, customized sugar-free solutions across all types of confectionery.

The Applications Research and Technical Service (ARTS) Group at Corn Products Specialty Ingredients has extensive experience in formulating sugar-free and reduced-sugar baked goods, and can help you formulate your better-for-you products — breads, cookies, cakes, icings, crémes, chocolate coatings and chips — by integrating polyols, fibers, and other ingredients to create solutions that meet your specific goals.

We have an extensive line of maltitol, maltitol syrup, and sorbitol products that can be integrated into baked goods which are lower in calories, lower in sugars, and lower in glycemic impact than their full-sugar counterparts.

The ARTS Lab is equipped with pilot mixers and ovens to assist you with feasibility and concept development, and can provide expertise in water activity, texture measurement, and controlled temperature as well as humidity shelf life testing. Through outside partnerships, we can provide scale-up opportunities and/or assistance with production start-up. Also through outside partnerships, we can assist you with sensory testing and preliminary consumer testing.

Corn Products Specialty Ingredients can help to dramatically improve the flavor and texture of your no-sugar-added and reduced fat dairy products. Our polyols can replace the bulk and most of the sweetness of sucrose and syrups. Our polyols can also replace or improve the lingering sweetness of high intensity sweeteners.

We've developed several new products to replace sugars in ice cream, frozen novelties, yogurts, milk shakes, and yogurt drinks. These products deliver exceptional taste and texture qualities that far exceed traditional sugar-free and reduced-sugar products. In fact, several consumer tests have shown that no-sugar-added ice cream formulated with Corn Products Specialty Ingredients' patent-pending MALTISWEET® IC maltitol syrup tastes as good as regular full-sugar ice cream.

Our Applications Research and Technical Service (ARTS) Lab is equipped with at a Microthermics UHT/HTST lab pasteurizer with an in-line homogenizer and chiller, as well as additional freezer and refrigeration capacity. ARTS can work with customers in our Newark, Delaware facility to develop new concepts, then scale up at the customer or in university pilot facilities. We can also provide additional sensory or consumer testing through an existing partnership program.

While confectionery, baked goods and dairy products are some of the most common areas where polyols are used, polyols also offer significant functionality in a variety of non-food categories such as oral care, cosmetics and even industrial applications. Polyols provide bulk and viscosity, are non-cariogenic, and can be used to control moisture and water activity.

In oral care, sorbitol solutions and maltitol syrups provide a soothing mouthfeel and a refreshing, cool taste to toothpaste and mouthwash, as well as resistance to dental caries. Sorbitol is also an excellent humectant, keeping the product viscous but not too dry or moist. This property, as well as its lubricity and hygroscopicity, also make sorbitol an integral ingredient in cosmetic creams, hair care products and lotions. In soft gel capsules and products such as paint balls, liquid polyols act as flexibility enhancers, plasticizers, humectants and softeners. Sorbitol can also be a cryoprotectant, depressing the freezing point of surimi and other frozen products so that ice crystals do not damage tissue. Freeze point depression is also key to sorbitol's use in winter-time road and airport sprays to prevent ice build-up on surfaces.

All of the same characteristics described above are also important to many industrial applications such as adhesives and glues, joint compound, paper products, gummed tape and cork binders. Our GLYSTAR® line combines polyols, glycerin and/or propylene glycol to take advantage of the collective properties of each of these ingredients in low moisture systems.

The functional uses of our polyols are limited only by the borders of creativity.
